A proud partner of Honoring a Life

Michael Darien Lopez
Mike passed away from pancreatic cancer, on Thursday, October 18, 2018. His life partner, Gloria Rockel, was with him throughout his struggle, never leaving his side.

We salute you, Mike, for all the obstacles you overcame in your life: born in Aruba with a club foot (Mom and Dad wept, thinking he would never be able to walk; wasted tears), Oklahoma Military Academy (odd place for an adamant rulebreaker), a year at the University of Tulsa, a job as a roustabout in the Texas oilfields, a stint as a delivery truck driver for Pepsi, a spell as an x-ray technician, over twenty years as a Yellow Cab driver in Tulsa (don’t worry, Tulsa, he told wild stories but he named no names!), two heart bypasses, moving to Pasadena, Texas (treadmill in Dad’s garage – heart be healthy now, or else!), certified as a CAD operator, landed a job with TXDOT inspecting traffic flow patterns, and in between all that, five ex-wives (he later said he wouldn’t do that anymore, he just wasn’t good at it). He reinvented himself so many times, he ran out of earthly variations. We are so proud of you, Mike! Your stubbornness is legendary!

Mike was predeceased by his parents, James L. and Mary G. Lopez, and his brothers, David L. Lopez and James D. Lopez. He leaves behind his life partner, Gloria Rockel; his bereaved cat, Louie; his brother, Victor Lopez (wife Marty); sisters, Leslie Lopez Cantu (husband Macedonio), and Sharon Lopez Mosley (husband Alan); his aunt, Adriana Devolder; his cousins, Tracy Novinger and Candace Kane, and Ivonne, Patricia, Angelica and Lorena Carlos Devolder, and their families; and many nieces and nephews. Oh, and not to mention, he also leaves behind 15 or more boxes of well-read books, numerous poems and stories, and seven computers. We love you, Mike, and treasure your memory.
